Getting people to change the way they think and feel about animals and nature to the point where they change their own personal habits, get involved, or even take a stand can be a monumental challenge. It takes a dash of content, a pinch of age-appropriateness, a cupful of emotion, the sifting of fact from fiction, and a smorgasbord of hands-on experience.
Vanderwerf examined the factors necessary for effectively communicating the critical issues facing animals, nature, and conservation. She also led an interactive discussion about how to achieve the right combination to reach a zoo’s diverse target audiences.
